Changing Requirements in the MBA Application Process
/The MBA application process is in a state of flux. MBA programs are always trying to find ways to build a class of students that is well rounded yet reflective of the school's ideals, values, and personality. Traditionally, this means an interview process that includes several essays, interviews, and references to gather a sense of the candidates' qualifications and personality.
As of late, we've seen this process disrupted. MBA admissions committees are beginning to think differently about the process. We now see video interviews, group interviews, fewer essays and sometimes even shorter essays. How can you best prepare for these changes to the MBA application process? The full answer is certainly dependent on the individual applicant and the prospective institution. Generally, though, keep in mind that preparation for later stage application activities like interviews and references begins early in your application process. As you select schools to apply to you will begin to frame how you would like to be perceived by specific admissions committees. This will help you focus on and articulate your key strengths and contributions to the prospective MBA program.
One of the keys to a successful application is understanding how you will contribute to an MBA class and conveying this in a manner that is both genuine and aligned with the school's culture. You will need to nail this aspect of your candidacy irrespective the means of evaluation. Whether in essay form or video, the MBA application process requires applicants to dig deep and communicate the results of such introspection...so get ready for your close-up!
